Website Security Basics for Small Businesses
A simple checklist covering HTTPS, strong credentials, software updates, backups, access control and safe handling of customer information.
Use HTTPS
HTTPS protects data in transit and is expected for modern websites. Keep certificates valid and configured correctly.
Protect credentials
Do not store database passwords, API secrets or private keys in public repositories or shared ZIP files. Use environment variables or protected configuration where the hosting setup supports them.
Keep backups
Maintain backups that can actually be restored. Periodically test restoration instead of assuming a backup is usable.
Limit access
Give administrators only the access they need. Remove old accounts and rotate credentials after a suspected exposure.
Update software
Keep the operating system, server software, frameworks and dependencies maintained. Review updates before deploying them to production.
